What to Expect at Your Child's First Swim Lesson
No surprises. Here's exactly how your child's first lesson goes.Â
No surprises. Here's exactly how your child's first lesson goes.Â
Every child deserves to feel at home in the water. But I also know the first lesson can feel like a big deal, for your child and for you. So here is exactly what happens when you book with me, no surprises.
Before we get in
You do not need much. A swimsuit, a towel, and if your little one is not potty trained, a swim diaper. I bring everything else. We meet at your home or community pool, wherever your family swims. I will ask you a few questions first: your child's age, any fears or past experiences with water, and anything about their learning style I should know. If your child has special needs, tell me everything. That information helps me teach them better, it never counts against them.
The first few minutes
We do not start with skills. We start with trust. I get in the water first, I let your child watch, and we play. Blowing bubbles, splashing, getting their face a little wet on their terms. Some kids jump right in. Some kids sit on the steps for ten minutes and just watch. Both are fine. I never force a child underwater or push them past what they are ready for. That is the trauma-informed part of how I teach, and it matters more than any drill.
What the lesson looks like
My lessons are short and focused, built around your child's age and ability. For little ones, we work on comfort first: floating on the back, holding the wall, kicking, reaching for the steps. For older kids and adults, we build real swimming skills layer by layer. Everything is play-based because that is how kids learn best, and I adjust in real time based on what your child shows me.
You are welcome to watch from nearby. What I ask is that you let me lead. If your child looks to you for rescue every thirty seconds, it is harder for them to settle in with me. Trust the process. Most kids who cry at lesson one are laughing by lesson three.
After the lesson
I will tell you what we worked on, what went well, and what we will build on next time. I will also give you one or two things to practice between lessons, because consistency is what makes skills stick. You will get honest feedback from me every time. If something is not working, we change the approach. Your child is not the problem, the plan is.
A note for nervous parents
If you are anxious about the water yourself, you are not alone, and you are not a bad parent. Many of the adults I teach are learning alongside their kids. Fear is information, not failure. My job is to make the water feel safe for your whole family.
Ready when you are. Book a consultation and let's talk about your swimmer.
